Diocese of Australia and New Zealand: ACOE Youth Association Walkathon

2008-10-03

On Sunday 28th of August 2008, the Assyrian Church of the East Youth Association of Sydney conducted their third annual walkathon. In years past, funds raised from the walkathon have been donated to worthy causes. This year all donations will be donated towards the Assyrian Church of the East building initiatives, the Starlight Children's Foundation Australia and the 'Channel Crossing for Life Campaign (Children's Hospital at Westmead). The one hundred participants, distinguishable in their specially made yellow t-shirts, successfully completed a 10km walk. The walk commenced at St. Mary's Church in Fairfield and following a number of pit stops, concluded at St. Hurmizd Cathedral in Greenfield Park.

This spiritually uplifting event has proven to be a success since its inception some three years ago owing to the awareness it brings to notable charitable causes. The walkathon is designed to bring members of the Church together in aid and support for charitable organisations and works of Christian kindness and generosity to those most in need within the Assyrian community and the broader Australian community.

Highlights included the enjoyable atmosphere amongst members of the Church who passionately sang and danced throughout the sunny afternoon. Moreover the walkers were able to reflect on the fact that many individuals in the community are in need of financial assistance and this activity, in many respects, is able to provide assistance.

The walkathon proved to be a resounding success with more than $10,000 raised thus far. The event was a fruitful way for Christians to help all individuals in need. The day ended with a meal being shared in fellowship by the participants in recognition of their physical efforts. The Youth Association of the Assyrian Church of the East in Sydney extend their thanks to the following individuals and businesses for their generous support: Mr. Joe Yacou of Brand FX for the creation and supply of walkathon t-shirts, Dr. John Atto and Dr. William Menashi for providing aid on the day, Mr. Nissan Nissan of Bet Nahrain Transport for the provision of transportation services on the day as well as all those faithful and energetic individuals who supported this most important activity.
